Sub7 [Subseven] RAT

Remember "Sub Seven"? I remember a friend of mine used it to keep tabs on his home pc at school. I preferred to use the command prompt and hack my OWN pc's rather than break the law, exploiting netbios via the net.exe executable. It was fun to code scripts and jobs. It was fun to watch someone else use sub7 legitimately also. If you're not famliar with it, it was a script kiddie "hacking tool" that eventually wound up being detected by all main stream antivirus tools everywhere. I believe that the UN finally out-lawed it[source]. It was by far one of the most popular administration tools of the time. It could be used both legally and illegally.

The trojan horse was coded in Delphi, which you hardly ever hear of. To this day, I've never heard anyone mention its name in modern times ( the programming language ). It closely resembles Microsoft Visual Basic in every way, from the GUI builder to the syntax. A lot of people never knew that sub7 was designed with something based off the design of VB6, but it was. I'm actually interesting in obtaining and playing around with the language now. At any rate, the author was very thorough and talented with his work, and to this day it's one of the most remembered R.A.T. [ Remote Administration Tools ] that has ever existed.

It had a very sharp GUI and server editor. You could change the server icon, make an image load upon its execution (making it look like you just opened a picture and not an exe), had custom notification settings like ICQ and ICR. It gave you an ton of choices as to startup methods, etc. I can only imagine the amount of code that went into it. It also had CGI notifications, where you could have a http webserver with a configured .cgi file and it would list ip's and names given to them by the users. My friend mystery-X used to love to play around with the speech to text engine. he played a prank on another friend of ours once. Dude flipped out when the computer started talking to him. lol

Supposedly a 64 bit version came out that was written in a different language than Delphi in 2010. I'm a little surprised that the author didn't get in trouble. As far as I know he didn't. The thing about remote administration tools is that they are not illegal in and of themselves. I suppose it depends on how you make the intention of them known. As far as I know the author of sub7 wasn't encouraging illegal behavior. The same goes with Metaspliot. You can use it either illegally or legally. Because of this, the actual software is in a grey area of the law. It's like having the legal right to bare arms. Unless you abuse that right, then you're in the clear.
